Beginner’s tip to make good microwave chocolate mug cake.
- Once the wet and dry ingredients are added, mixing should be minimum(4 swirls). if you make the cake and you notice the mug cake is dense then you’ve overmixed the mug cake batter.
- The first time you make a mug cake, use an extra-large mug. if you do decide to make it in a smaller mug then place it on a small plate to avoid spills in your microwave.
- Check the setting on your microwave, some microwaves have settings for medium to high, if your microwave has these settings then make the chocolate mug cake in a medium setting.
- The mug cake needs less than 45-1 minute. 45 minutes will give you a gooey mug cake and 1 minute will give you a light airy cake texture. choose your preference.
- Add extra chocolate chip if you want pockets of melted chocolate mixed in with the cake.
- Let the mug cake cool for a few minutes before. 2-3 minutes. if you can’t wait that long then add a scoop of ice cream.
Hot and cold in this instance works well.

Ingredients.
The ingredients mentioned below use standard measuring cups and spoons.
3 tablespoons of flour
2 tablespoons of sugar
2 teaspoons of cocoa powder
3 tablespoons of milk
1 tablespoon of butter(can substitute with oil but you do taste the oil especially if it is coconut oil)
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1/8 teaspoon(a pinch, reduce more if you are using salted butter)
1 and 1/2 tablespoons of chocolate chip(I’ve used larger chocolate buttons instead)
Method
Add flour(3 tbsp)into a microwaveable cup. Please read the beginner’s tips before proceeding with the recipe.
Add sugar(2 tbsp).
Followed by cocoa powder(2 tsp), baking powder(1/4 tsp), a pinch of salt.
Mix well.
Into a separate smaller bowl, add butter(1 tbsp), milk( 3 tbsp), vanilla(1/4 tsp), and microwave for 3-4 seconds or just long enough to melt the butter.
Pour the melted butter into the dry ingredients.
Combine well, try not to overmix here as you don’t want the cake to be dense.
Add 1 tablespoon of the chocolate chips and push them into the cake mix.
Now add the rest of the chocolate chip to the surface of the chocolate mug cake.
Microwave for 45 seconds for a more gooey mug cake. if you prefer to have moist but airy chocolate mug cake then add another 10 seconds to the cooking time.
I find letting the chocolate mug cake cool a little before I dig in gives a tastier experience.
