A warm pudding texture full of chocolate flavour that tastes almost like fudgy cake.
And all it takes to make a decadent bread pudding recipe are some leftover bread, condensed milk which can be substituted, eggs, cocoa powder and sugar.

It’s hard to believe how decadent, rich and gooey this chocolate bread pudding is considering, it’s made up of day-old bread and just a handful of ingredients.
You can make it overnight and pop it in the oven for a chocolate-themed breakfast for the weekend.
Makes a budget-friendly, quick dessert to put together for friends and family.
You can make them fancy by baking them in moulds and adding some chocolate chips to make the bread pudding extra rich.
Invert it onto a plate and you have a dessert fit for any special occasion.
I’ll give you directions on how to do this below.
How to serve chocolate bread pudding.
- Serve with extra chocolate sauce or a hot fudge sauce.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream.
- A few strawberries on the side.
- Serve with whipped cream or a coat of powdered sugar.
- I like to brush some cinnamon butter(simply sprinkle some cinnamon over a dollop of butter)and brush over the bread pudding just as it comes off the oven.
- While baking, drop a few large chunks of chocolate pieces so they bake into the bread pudding recipe. Imagine hitting spots of those melted chocolate while digging into your bread pudding.

- I’ve tried both hot and cold, I would recommend warming the pudding for 30-40 seconds before serving.
- Can I make the bread pudding overnight?
- Yes. simply make the pudding overnight and bake in the morning.
- Can I substitute milk with condensed milk?
- Yes you can but the condensed milk+ melted chocolate gives a richer taste than regular milk

RECIPE DIFFICULTY-EASY
Ingredients to make the bread pudding.
The ingredients mentioned below use standard measuring cups and spoons
10 slices of regular sandwich bread
150g chocolate(1 cup of chocolate chips)
1/2 a cup of condensed milk(substitute with 1 cup of milk, refer to faq above).
1/2 a cup of sugar(you can reduce it to 1/4 cup as condensed milk is sweet as well)
1 teaspoon of vanilla essence
2 eggs whisked lightly
1/4 cup of cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1/8 teaspoon(a pinch of cinnamon)
1 tablespoon of butter
How to make chocolate bread pudding
You can use an 8″ round or square pan but I used an oval-shaped Pyrex dish.
Butter all the sides of the baking dish and set it aside.
Cut the bread into 1″ cubes and place them in a medium-sized bowl.
Include the sides of the bread as well. set aside.
How to make the chocolate custard.
The first step of making the chocolate custard is, making the chocolate sauce.
You can do this in a microwave or over a stovetop.
- Microwave method.
- To a medium-sized, deep bowl, add the chocolate(chocolate chip), condensed milk and vanilla essence.
- Microwave for 40 seconds, mix, microwave for another 40 seconds, and mix until you have a smooth, thick chocolate sauce.
- Stove top method.
- Place a pan over low heat(the lowest heat possible).
- Add condensed milk, chocolate and vanilla. warm the ingredients for 3-5 minutes.
- Mix until chocolate melts, remove from stove and continue to mix until you have a chocolate sauce.
Let the chocolate sauce cook for 10 minutes and then whisk in the eggs and cocoa powder.
Combine well.
Add the bread cubes into the chocolate-egg custard mixture.
If you find the chocolate sauce is not enough to cover the bread, add a little more condensed milk(1/4 cup, substitute with milk) and combine.
Let the bread sit in the chocolate sauce for 10 minutes and then give it a mix again.

If you decide to make individual bread puddings then follow the below instructions.
You will need foil cups or aluminium moulds, I have not done this with ramekins but I’m sure this can be done.
Butter the insides of the mould lightly. then pack some of the bread pudding mixtures into the moulds.
- Any larger pieces of bread should be broken down with a spoon before spooning them into the mould.
- You can add a few mini chocolate chips to the mixture as well.
Press down and bake for the recommended time.
Once the bread pudding is baked, let it cool for a few minutes.
Run a sharp knife around the edges and then invert it onto a plate.
Baking the chocolate bread pudding.
Preheat the oven to 170C and bake for 35-45 minutes.
Remove the chocolate bread pudding from the oven and allow it to cool for 10 minutes.
Mix a pinch(1/8 tsp) with butter(1 tbsp)and brush over chocolate bread pudding.
Serve with toppings recommended above.
