Air fryer hot wings, these chicken wing recipe uses an air fryer to give you the crispiest and juiciest wings to toss in hot sauce.
Air frying chicken wings takes only half of the work it takes to deep fry but gives you the same results as the latter.
So next time you need to make a large batch of hot wings, bake these wings in an air fryer without breaking a sweat.
What to serve with Air fryer hot wings
- Serve with a dipping sauce, these can be a regular chilli lime dipping sauce, a mayonnaise hot sauce or a sweet and spicy sauce.
- Serve with some air fryer fries(link given below).
- Any type of fried rice from frozen mixed vegetable rice to a simple egg fried rice.
- A fresh pineapple salsa, a cucumber salad, carrot salad with parsley to keep things cool.
- Serve with some sweet grilled pineapple or corn.
Tips on making the best air fryer hot wings(buffalo wings)
- If you are using frozen wings, rest them in a bowl of water for 15-20 minutes to defrost.
- The chicken wings should be dry of any moisture, so use some thick kitchen paper towels or cloth to remove any excess water.
- The secret ingredient in these air-fried wings is the baking powder used in the tossing. the baking powder adds extra crunch to the skin as well as plumps up the air frying wings. so don’t forget the baking powder, it’s a must.
- Before you add the wings into the air fryer basket, you can brush or spray a little oil to avoid the skin sticking to it.
- Half way through air frying the wings, you will have to turn wings for an even fry, use a tong to gently pry the wings if they are stuck on to the basket.
- How to reheat chicken wings in the air fryer– simply add the refrigerated wings into the air fryer and air fry at 200C for 3-5 minutes.

How to make air fryer hot wings(buffalo wings)
Please make sure to read the recipe instructions carefully to avoid mistakes.
Ingredients.
The ingredients mentioned below use standard measuring cups and spoons.
500g of chicken wings
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon of pepper
1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
To make hot/buffalo sauce
1/3 cup butter
2/3 cup hot sauce(choose a brand that you are familiar with, I used a brand that is available here and a habanero hot sauce, if you are in Sri Lanka, you can try our nai miris version of hot sauces available)
1/2 a teaspoon of garlic powder
2 tablespoons of tomato sauce
Method
Split the chicken wing into flats and drummettes, discard the wingtip.
Pat dry the wings and drummettes and place them in a bowl.
Add salt(1/2 tsp), pepper(1/2 tsp),onion powder(1/2 tsp), baking powder(1/2 tsp).
Toss well, cover, and set aside for 10-15 minutes.
Preheat your air fryer at190C(375F) for 5 minutes.
Once your air fryer is preheated, brush or spray a little oil on the basket mesh and place the wings and drumlets in a single layer.
Cook at 190C(375F)for 25 minutes(you will be turning these wings, halfway through the cooking time).
How to make the hot sauce for the air fried wings
While the wings are air frying, add butter(1/3 cup)into a microwavable and micro for 5 seconds or until butter melts.
Add hot sauce(2/3 cup hot sauce, choose a brand that you are familiar with, I used a habanero hot sauce available here, if you are in Sri Lanka, you can try the nai miris version of the hot sauces available), garlic powder(1/2 tsp), tomato sauce(2 tbsp)and combine well.
Taste and make adjustments as per your need, if you want the hot sauce to be a lot sweeter then increase the tomato sauce quantity.
12 minutes into cooking time, turn the wings to cook the rest of the way.
Once the wings are cooked, drop them into the hot sauce.
Toss them well and serve immediately.
